Ostriches are animals that bring great benefits to humans. Since ancient times, ostriches have provided meat and eggs, and their fur and feathers have been used to make clothing, household items and decorations.
Ostriches are about 2.2m tall, with a neck length of about 1m, and weigh about 100-130kg. Ostriches often run up to 70km/h. The maximum recorded speed of an ostrich is 97km/h. Ostriches are the only birds in the world with 2 toes. They have a dangerous toenail, about 7cm long, that can be fatal if kicked. They often tend to move forward, so if you are ever in front of an angry ostrich, lie flat on the ground and cover your head.
Ostriches can withstand high summer temperatures without any discomfort. They do not have sweat glands to regulate their body temperature, so on very hot days they often use their wings to cover their bodies and featherless heads.
Ostriches have a distinctive appearance. Their eyes account for about two-thirds of their head mass (60g/eye). They can focus on an object directly under their beak or distinguish a moving object in the distance.
